Former NFL player Bashaud Breeland arrested again in Charlotte

Breeland was arrested in August 2023 for stolen car and drug-related charges.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Super Bowl champion is facing more charges in Mecklenburg County while he continues to deal with legal issues from 2023.

Bashaud Breeland, 32, was arrested on Saturday, according to court records. Breeland is facing charges of drug possession, resisting arrest, assaulting a public official, and injury to personal property.

Records state the incident he was arrested for happened on Saturday. Breeland allegedly grabbed officers by their shirts and pushed them away, ripping one of the officer's shirts and radio ear piece while resisting arrest, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department incident report.

In total, Breeland is facing charges of:

  • Assaulting a government official
  • Possession with intent to manufacture, sell, or deliver a Schedule I controlled substance
  • Possession with intent to manufacture, sell, or deliver a Schedule V controlled substance
  • Possession with intent to manufacture, sell, or deliver marijuana
  • Injury to personal property
  • Resisting arrest

In North Carolina, Schedule I Controlled Substances can be heroin, ecstasy, GHB, methaqualone, peyote, and opiates. Schedule V Controlled Substances are typically over-the-counter drugs.

The possession-related charges are all listed as felonies with a maximum prison sentence of 39 months. 

Breeland was arrested in August 2023 after being found in a stolen Mercedes-Benz G550 with eight firearms, over 5 pounds of marijuana, and 62 grams of suspected mushrooms, as well as digital scales, a vacuum sealer, and bags, according to CMPD. His court case is ongoing in that incident with a next court date of Oct. 4.

Records do not show if Breeland has posted bond for his charges from Saturday. His next court appearance is on Monday for this case.

Breeland played eight seasons as a cornerback in the NFL, spending time with the Washington Redskins, Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Chiefs, and Minnesota Vikings after being drafted out of Clemson. Breeland won the Super Bowl in the 2019 season with the Chiefs. Breeland played high school football in Fairfax, South Carolina.

Breeland was also arrested in York County in April 2020 on multiple charges, including open container and marijuana possession.
