SALISBURY, N.C. — An infant was among three people shot Wednesday night, Salisbury Police confirmed. The shooting came just hours after a young girl was shot in the city.
It happened Wednesday around 10 p.m. at a home on South Main Street near Mildred Avenue and the Chestnut Hill Cemetery. When officers arrived, they found an infant and two other people who had all been shot. Police didn't confirm the child's relationship to the other victims, but neighbors told WCNC Charlotte one of the women is the baby's mother.
The infant and one of the other victims were taken to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist with life-threatening injuries, according to the Salisbury Police Department. Capt. T.J. Crews said both victims are in stable condition. The third victim was taken to a Concord hospital and was released.
WCNC Charlotte saw bullet holes and shattered glass on the outside of the apartment where it happened. Ring surveillance video from the home shows police investigating the scene Wednesday night.
A neighbor, who didn't want to be identified, said he saw the two women shortly before the shooting.
"I was coming in the house and I saw two girls standing out here, when I walked in the house, probably one to three minutes later I heard some gunshots," the man said.
He said he's heard people refer to shootings as "close to home," but this was so close that it was "jarring."
"It's traumatic, I don't feel safe," another neighbor said. "I'm ready to move."
It was the second time in hours that a shooting was reported in Salisbury. A Salisbury girl was shot while walking down the street late Wednesday afternoon, police said. Crews said detectives have no evidence that connects the incidents to any other recent shootings in Salisbury.
State and federal investigators have been called to assist Salisbury Police with their investigations. Salisbury officers are working overtime to increase patrols in hot spots, according to Crews, who said detectives are following up on several leads in each case.
In the meantime, Crews pleaded with anyone who knows something to tell detectives.
"There are people in our community who know who committed all of these shootings," he said. "We need them to come forward and help us."
There is no evidence suggesting the two shootings are related, Salisbury Police said. No suspects have been arrested in either case at this time.
