CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. — A North Carolina highway in Cabarrus County is closed after floodwaters washed out the road during Tuesday's storms.

The Georgeville Fire Department posted photos on Facebook showing water running underneath the asphalt as crews were digging up the road.

Heavy rain led to flooding in parts of Cabarrus County Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Multiple water rescues were reported, including an incident along Highway 200 near 601. Firefighters used a raft to remove someone who was trapped inside their vehicle when they got caught up in floodwaters.

Tuesday's storms caused widespread damage across the Charlotte area. One person was killed and at least two others were hurt when a possible tornado hit the Claremont area in Catawba County. National Weather Service crews will be on-site Wednesday to determine if the storm was a tornado or straight-line winds.
