MONROE, N.C. — Monroe City Manager Larry Faison was terminated by the Monroe City Council during a special council meeting Friday, the city announced.

Assistant City Manager Brian Borne was sworn in as the Interim City Manager, effective 5 p.m. Friday. He was unanimously appointed.

According to a statement from the city government, city councilwoman Lynn Kezia motioned to terminate Faison during the meeting, calling for his termination the same day. Councilman Franco McGee seconded the motion, and council members Angelia James and Surluta Anthony voted in favor. Mayor Bobby Kilgore, Mayor Pro Tem Marion Holloway, and councilman Freddie Gordon opposed the termination.

Faison had been serving as city manager since October 2014. He was earning more than $171,000 per year at the time he was fired and will receive a severance equal to one year's worth of gross salary, plus benefits like health and life insurance.

WCNC Charlotte reached out to Monroe Mayor Bobby Kilgore on this decision but has not heard back yet. Communications and Tourism Director Peter Hovanec said council members would need to provide the grounds of Faison's termination. We have reached out for more details.
