1 dead after shooting at apartment complex in southwest Charlotte, suspect charged

Police responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call for service around 2:01 a.m. on Deanna Lane at Brook Valley Apartments on Sunday.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — One person is dead after a shooting at an apartment complex in southwest Charlotte Sunday morning, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police confirm. Monday, police made an arrest in the case.

Police responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call for service around 2:01 a.m. Sunday on Deanna Lane at Brook Valley Apartments. When officers arrived to the scene they located a man outside an apartment building with a gunshot wound. 

He was pronounced dead on the scene, officials said. He has been identified as Ramon Antonio Alvarado-Cubas, 32.

Homicide Detectives charged Rafael Molina Pena, 39, for Alvorado-Cubas' murder. 

He was located on February 17 and arrested without incident. After being interviewed by detectives, he was taken into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office and charged with murder.

This was one of two homicides that occurred early Sunday morning in the Steele Creek area.

Minutes later, officers responded to another shooting at The Trap Bar & Billiards on Westinghouse Boulevard. Police said a man was transported to a hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Police said there is no indication these cases are connected.
