Arrest made after Caldwell County hit-and-run that killed cyclist

The hit-and-run happened on US 221 in Caldwell County Thursday. State troopers said the minivan crossed the double yellow line on a curve and hit the victim head-on.

GRANVILLE COUNTY, N.C. — A man has been arrested nearly a week after a fatal hit and run collision in Caldwell County. 

Charles Steward Bean, 55, of Creedmoor, North Carolina has been arrested and charged with felony hit and run. The NC State Highway Patrol has been looking for him since the hit and run occurred on Thursday, October 10.

The incident happened on US 221 in Caldwell County. State troopers said the minivan crossed the double yellow line on a curve and hit the victim head-on.

Ignacio Giraldo, 61, of Sunrise, Florida, was flown to Johnson City Medical Center in Tennessee in critical condition and died Saturday. 

Giraldo had been cycling with his daughter and two other people at the time, officials say.

Bean was arrested at his residence in Granville County by the SHP Collision Reconstruction Unit and was held at the Granville County Detention Center under a $35,000 bond. He is being transferred to Caldwell County Jail.

A 2008 Toyota Sienna minivan has been located and secured by the SHP.

Earlier this week, officials released photos and a description of the possible suspect and vehicle. The images were obtained after receiving a tip that the vehicle in question was at a Boone gas station.

Bean was identified Wednesday morning.

Additional charges are pending. His mugshot has not been released at this time.
