Gov. Cooper weighs options amid vaping epidemic

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper addressed vaping concerns as other governors across the country issue public health emergencies.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — North Carolina Gov. Cooper is addressing the vaping epidemic as other governors across the country issue public health emergencies for vaping-related illnesses.

While the governor didn't give any specifics as to how his administration would respond to the issue, he said they're "weighing all the options."

"I'm deeply concerned when children are being marketed to with these...flavored devices that deliver nicotine," Cooper said.

The latest numbers showed 26 people died and more than 1,200 people suffered lung injuries believed to be associated with vaping.

So far in North Carolina, there have been 40 vaping related illnesses reported, 10 of which were in Mecklenburg County.

The federal government was expected to release updated case numbers on Thursday.

Eight states across the country are now banning e-cigarettes. In North Carolina, New Hanover County is considering a similar option -- either to ban e-cigarettes in public places or a more broad proposal of banning all nicotine products.

As part of the proposal, there would also be options to support free tobacco quitting services. The potential vaping ban before it goes for a vote by the board in December. If the ban is approved, it’ll be the first in the state.
