Damaging winds, hail possible with Friday storms in Charlotte, Piedmont region

First Warn: "Low risk" threat with scattered afternoon storms

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Scattered storms Friday in Charlotte and the surrounding Piedmont region could result in isolated damaging winds and hail, the WCNC First Warn Weather Team forecasts.

Meteorologist Chris Mulcahy explained the severe threat with Friday's storms are low but those who do encounter a severe storm could see an impact.

Scattered severe thunderstorms are possible Friday in Charlotte and across the greater Piedmont region.

"I think we could have some wet microbursts," Mulcahy said. "That's when the winds 'jump out' of the center of the storm all at once."

If that were to happen, the National Weather Service would likely issue a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for the storm.

While the chance of seeing a "severe" thunderstorm during the Friday commute is low, others could still encounter strong showers and thunderstorms.

Strong storms can cause roadway flooding and decreased visibility for drivers.

A "severe thunderstorm" is classified by the National Weather Service as a thunderstorm capable of producing 60 mph winds or 3/4" size hail.

The WCNC First Warn Weather team will be tracking the storms and bringing you updates on-air and online as the weather warrants.

Friday's storms in Charlotte are unrelated to the tropical threat in the Gulf Coast.

Tropical Storm Barry is forecasted to make landfall in Louisiana by Saturday morning. Tropical Storm Barry will bring heavy rain and a dangerous flood threat to New Orleans and surrounding areas of southern Louisiana.
