Friday storms leave damage behind in Kannapolis area

Several tornado and thunderstorm warnings were issued Friday afternoon as severe weather raced through the Carolinas.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The severe thunderstorm watch that was set to expire at 11 p.m. was canceled early Friday evening.

"Watch canceled west of this orange line and severe threat over for the western Carolinas. Threat continues in Central and eastern Carolinas,"  chief meteorologist Brad Panovich posted on Facebook around 7:30 p.m.

A tornado warning issued for Cabarrus and Rowan counties expired at 5:45 p.m. Friday. Before that, Cabarrus, Iredell, Mecklenburg, and Rowan counties were under severe thunderstorm warnings until 5:30 p.m.

"5:00pm ET: Severe storms moving away from Lake Norman into Cabarrus and Rowan counties. Strong winds and heavy rain with this storm," said chief meteorologist Brad Panovich.

Two tornado warnings also popped up for Catawba and Iredell counties around 4 p.m. They were canceled just before 4:30 p.m.

"It doesn't look like anything touched down, but there were some damage reports on the Catawba/Iredell county line of some power lines knocked down," said Panovich.

Viewers sent Panovich video and pictures of menacing hail as well as pea-sized to baseball-sized hail.

He also received video of a wet microburst in Kannapolis with hail and winds over 60 mph.

The storms came in quickly and did a decent amount of damage for a lot of people near Circlewood Drive. The wind ripped a huge tree out by the root and it landed on one family's camper.

“It could be a lot worse. The trailer is the trailer but it could've hit the house, could've hit the garage, could've gone down anywhere," said Jerry Bennett.

Down the street, a tree narrowly missed a house and a Duke Energy crew quickly responded to wires down.
