Businesses supporting furloughed employees in Charlotte area

With no deal in sight, businesses are offering freebies and discounts to workers going without pay.

WAXHAW, N.C. — “We just wanted to give back.”

Ben Kallenbach, co-owner of 4th Corner Bakehouse and Coffee Company in Waxhaw is one of many good people hoping to help.

Approaching one month of the government shutdown, thousands of workers in our community are bracing to miss a second paycheck and holding on the best they can.

“It was our decision to just give what we could. We have been blessed with the ability to make great bread, and if somebody needs to come in and get something to eat or to feed their kids especially I’ll give you a loaf of bread. It’s really a no brainer,” Kallenbach explained.

Others are joining in, too. Salon M2 in Charlotte is offering free haircuts.

Pure Pizza posted on Facebook: “Your paycheck and wellbeing should not be a political debate.”

The business is offering a free meal to employees and their families.

As for the shutdown, there’s no deal in sight. President Trump insisted the government will not reopen until a southern border wall is funded. He asked Democrats for $5 billion dollars to build it.

But for 800,000 Americans, many are just asking to get paid for the work they’re doing, as the wall debate lingers on.

“If they need help and we can help them, then we’ll help them. It’s what we need to do. It takes a village,” said Kallenbach.
