Rivera says still no decision on Cam Newton's shoulder: 5 things to know Wednesday, December 19

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said no decision has been made on playing Cam Newton in the season's final two games as he deals with an apparent shoulder injury, a pack of coyotes was spotted near uptown and over 1,000 jobs will soon be coming to Charlotte.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

1. Ron Rivera says no decision has been made regarding Cam Newton's injured shoulder after a loss to the Saints

With the Panthers all but officially eliminated from the playoffs, the team has a big decision to make: should they sit Cam Newton so he can rest his shoulder? It's been an obvious hindrance to Newton's throwing ability, especially in Monday night's loss to New Orleans.

Head coach Ron Rivera said he still thinks Cam gives the Panthers the best chance to win but any decision on his playing time would be made by the team's medical staff.

"From what I've been told and my understanding, everybody understands what's happening," Rivera said. "That's more of a question for the medical staff and Cam Newton himself."

2. A pack of coyotes was spotted just outside uptown

Donna Ragan posted a video to her Facebook page warning residents in the Sedgefield area about the sighting around 4:30 a.m. on Monday, December 17.

In the video, you can't hear much, but you can clearly see two large coyotes strolling through the neighborhood and walking up to Ragan's mother's home.

NC Wildlife Commission told NBC Charlotte the spike in sightings is no surprise to them. They say the city location isn't a shock either.

"They can live in the most remote dense forest, or they can live in the middle of a large city," NC Wildlife Biologist Danny Ray said.

3. A mom says she was approached by a knife-wielding man near the Midtown Target

With less than a week left for people to do Christmas shopping, a local mom is bringing to light a frightening encounter.

In a social media post, she says she was shopping with her infant near the Target in Midtown around 1 p.m. last Wednesday. That’s when she says a man with a large hunting knife approached them.  The mom says the armed man approached her near the intersection of Charlottetowne Avenue and Kings Drive. She says she was able to get away by running toward a crowd.

CMPD says the mom did not file a police report, but officers circled the area and did not find the armed man.

4. Avidxchange announced the addition of more than 1,200 jobs in Charlotte

AvidXchange, a leading financial tech company headquartered in Charlotte, is expanding and adding more than 1,200 jobs in the process.

Michael Praeger says AvidXchange will double its staff of 1,200 in less than five years. This includes construction on another building to mirror its current location which opened just a few years ago.

The announcement comes on the heels of other companies choosing Charlotte to expand or relocate. Honeywell is moving its corporate office to Charlotte, and with it around 750 jobs. Lending Tree is bringing 436 new jobs.

5. Grinch-like thief steals Christmas tree from veterinarian's office

Law enforcement is searching for a real-life Grinch in North Carolina. Someone stole a Christmas tree from the front lawn of a veterinary hospital.

"The perp pulled up," said Meredith Boone, a Country Veterinary Hospital employee. "Unplugged our beautiful tree and just crammed it right in the passenger seat. Just like the Grinch put the tree up the chimney."

"He pulled right up like he knew what he was doing," said Kelly Presley, a Country Veterinary Hospital employee.

Instead of a makeshift sleigh, officials believe the Grinch-like suspect was driving a Ford Focus.
