Lancaster Co. deputy dies after collapsing during training

A Lancaster County deputy died Tuesday after collapsing during a training event.

LANCASTER COUNTY, S.C. – A Lancaster County deputy died Tuesday after collapsing during a training event.

According to Lancaster County Sheriff Barry Faile, Deputy James Kirk, 57, was rushed to the hospital after collapsing at the sheriff’s office firing range. He was pronounced dead at Springs Memorial Hospital.

Deputy Kirk served the Lancaster County community for 28 years. He retired from the Lancaster Police Department after 25 years and joined the sheriff’s office in 2015, where he continued his life of service.

“Deputy Kirk was a true public servant who dedicated his life to the service of others and this community,” said Sheriff Faile. “Our hearts are heavy as we mourn his loss. During this difficult time we ask that you keep Deputy Kirk’s family, his friends and his co-workers in your thoughts and prayers.”
