Two killed in weather-related crash in Cleveland County, troopers say

North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating after two people were killed in a crash early Tuesday in Cleveland County.

CLEVELAND COUNTY, N.C. – North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating after two people were killed in a crash early Tuesday in Cleveland County.

State troopers told NBC Charlotte that a man and woman were killed after they ran off the road and hit a tree on Whitaker Road in Mooresboro. Troopers said another driver was passing through the area and found the crashed vehicle around 4:30 a.m.

Authorities said the persistent rain that’s drenched the area for nearly two days played a factor in the crash.

"I would say probably too fast for the conditions," said First Sergeant Josh Dowdle. "It was raining heavily at the time and just looking at the damage to the vehicle, they were probably traveling at a good speed. It's substantially damaged, almost folded in half."

The victims have not been identified.
