Three teens charged with east Charlotte homicide

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police charged three teenagers in connection with the shooting death of a 26-year-old man in east Charlotte.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police charged three teenagers in connection with the shooting death of a 26-year-old man in east Charlotte.

CMPD responded to a call in the 1500 block of Wembley Drive a little before 5 p.m. Friday. When police arrived, officers found a man, identified as Eskinder Asefaw, with an apparent gunshot wound. Asefaw was pronounced dead at the hospital on Saturday morning, CMPD said.

During their investigation, detectives identified Tavone Tyrik Smith, 17, and a 15-year-old juvenile as suspects in the case.

Smith was charged with murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit armed robbery with a dangerous weapon.

A juvenile, who will not be identified due to his age, was also charged with murder, armed robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit murder and conspiracy to commit armed robbery.

A third suspect, also a juvenile, was charged Monday in connection to the crime. The 15-year-old was arrested at Garinger High School. Officers said he was in possession of a handgun and stolen vehicle.

The boy was charged with murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit murder and conspiracy to commit armed robbery with a dangerous weapon.
