Family wants answers in deadly highway mystery

A family is asking for the public's help identifying the driver of a deadly hit-and-run in Cleveland County earlier this week.

KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. -- A family is asking for the public's help identifying the driver of a deadly hit-and-run in Cleveland County earlier this week.

Highway Patrol said 24-year-old Jordan Gennett was riding his bike on U.S. 74 near Kings Mountain early Monday morning when a white 2003-2007 Chevrolet pickup truck hit him and didn't stop. Troopers haven't received any leads on the identity of the driver.

Gennett's sister, Kayla, described her brother as incredibly generous and fun-loving.

“He would do whatever he had to to get you out of that bad mood," she said. "Always smiling, laughing.”

She last saw him at her birthday party on Sunday.

“Just fun, relaxing, kicking back and not having to worry about anything,” Gennett recalled.

Gennett and her fiancée, Stephen Chereek, drove behind Jordan as he rode his bike back to Gastonia.

“Then we had to go around him because cars were getting behind us, and we didn’t want to hold anybody else up," Chereek said. "We wanted to make sure the cars knew he was there.”

The family is asking the driver responsible or anyone with information to come forward.

“What was going through your mind when you hit my brother and left him in the road, alone?” Gennett asked.

Anyone with information can call Highway Patrol at *HP.
