Overnight thunderstorms moving into Carolinas

Strong to severe storms are expected to develop in Tennessee before making their way into the Carolinas late Monday.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Thunderstorms are moving into the Carolinas for Tuesday morning after a severe weather system battered parts of the southeast Monday night.

First Warn Storm Chief Meteorologist Brad Panovich said the Carolinas should expect overnight thunderstorms but "not anything severe."

"Heavy rain and thunder to wake a few people up until about 4 a.m.," he said.

The Charlotte area is under a 70-percent chance of precipitation Tuesday morning and the early morning thunderstorms will carry gusts of up to 40 mph.

Again, good news for the Queen City is that the thunderstorms in the area will not be severe.

For areas north of Charlotte, heavy rain is expected with maybe some isolated thunderstorms. Panovich believes the Carolina coasts could see severe weather Tuesday as the storms continue to rumble eastward.

Strong thunderstorms formed in western Tennessee earlier on Monday before pushing to the southeast. Areas impacted by severe weather include Nashville, Tenn., Atlanta, Birmingham, Ala., Tallahassee, Fla., and Jacksonville, Fla.

“If you have friends or family to the west, make sure they are weather aware,” Panovich said. “Especially in the areas that are red and orange on the map.”
