Reports: Greg Olsen auditioning for 'Monday Night Football' analyst job

Carolina Panthers tight end Greg Olsen is reportedly auditioning to become an analyst for ESPN's Monday Night Football.

Carolina Panthers tight end Greg Olsen is reportedly auditioning to become an analyst for ESPN’s Monday Night Football.

According to a report from ESPN’s David Newton, Olsen was in Bristol, Conn. Wednesday to audition for the role as the network’s lead analyst, replacing Jon Gruden, who left ESPN to become the head coach of the Oakland Raiders.

In a tweet, Newton said if Olsen is selected and accepts the job, it would be expected that he retire and take the job beginning this season.

However, a report from Pro Football Talk’s Darin Gantt disputed that claim, saying Olsen’s audition isn’t anything that would take him off the football field in 2018. The 33-year-old is due to make $6.5 million in the final year of his contract with the Panthers.

Newton later tweeted that Olsen is reportedly committed to playing for the Panthers in 2018, but the position he's interviewing for with ESPN is for this upcoming season.

Both reports alleged that Panthers officials understand Olsen’s inquiry with ESPN is considered exploratory. Last year, Olsen served as an analyst for Fox Sports during the Panthers’ bye week.

Should Olsen get the job and leave football, the Panthers would be forced to find multiple tight ends, as free agent Ed Dickson reportedly reached an agreement to join the Seattle Seahawks.
