Snow forces school closings, early dismissals Monday

With up to eight inches of snow possible in the mountains of North Carolina, several area schools will be closed Monday.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – With up to eight inches of snow possible in the mountains of North Carolina, several area schools will be closed Monday.

School Closings for Monday, March 12

Alexander County Schools -- Dismissing early at 9 a.m.

Ashe County -- Closed

Avery County Schools -- Closed

Burke County -- Dismissing early at 9:30 a.m.

Cabarrus County Schools -- Dismissing early, beginning at 11:15 a.m.

Caldwell County Schools -- Dismissing early

Catawba County Schools -- Closed

Hickory Public Schools -- Dismissing early; Elementary students 8:30 a.m., Middle & High students 9 a.m.

Iredell-Statesville Schools -- Dismissing early

Mitchell County Schools -- Closed

Rowan-Salisbury Schools --- Dismissing early at 10 a.m.

Watauga County Schools -- Closed

Appalachian State University also canceled classes scheduled for Monday due to snow.

Snowfall is likely in the mountains throughout the day Monday. Some of the higher elevations in Watauga and Ashe County could see anywhere from five to seven inches, while most of the mountains will see around three inches of accumulation.

No schools in the Piedmont have announced closures or delays as of 5 a.m. Monday. First Warn Storm Team Chief Meteorologist Brad Panovich expects Monday morning’s cold rain to change over to snow at some point, with the foothills seeing up to four inches in some areas. In Charlotte, Panovich expects anywhere from a trace to up to an inch with little accumulation Monday afternoon.
