Man shot by AR-15 while hunting for coyote

A shooting investigation involving two hunters was underway Monday evening in Alexander County.

ALEXANDER COUNTY, N.C. -- Deputies in Alexander County are investigating after a man was fatally shot while hunting coyotes Monday evening.

Authorities received a 911 call in reference to a shooting on Edd Burgess Road Extension in Taylorsville a little before 6 p.m. When officers arrived, they found 26-year-old Michael Seth Marsh suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his chest.

Investigators said that Marsh was using an electronic coyote call when another man heard the sounds. The man told officers he heard coyotes screaming in the area, and when he saw something that looked like a coyote, he fired his AR-15 rifle and struck the man. When he realized he shot another man, the man rendered aid to Marsh and called 911. Marsh was taken to Wilkes Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The District Attorney's Office will review the evidence of the case before any charges are filed, according to the Alexander County Sheriff's Office. The NC Wildlife Resources Commission is assisting the investigation.
