NEW YORK  — Actor Dylan Baker tried to rescue an elderly neighbor before escaping a high-rise apartment fire in Manhattan on Tuesday.

It happened on the 33rd floor of a 46-floor building on West 43rd Street in the Hell's Kitchen area just before 4:30 p.m.

Baker, who has a recurring TV role in The Good Wife, told NBC New York he had just returned home with his family when an alarm went off and he saw smoke coming from his neighbor's apartment.

He says he pounded on her door and called her name before opening the door — he was surprised to find it open — and seeing smoke and flames everywhere.

"When I opened the door, it was a full-fledged fire," he told NBC. "It was terrifying."

He says he shut the door and called 911 before hurrying his family out of the building.

Firefighters arrived and quickly put out the fire, which was confined to the one apartment. The woman, who was not identified officially, was found unconscious on the floor and hospitalized in critical condition.

Baker described his neighbor as a friend of his family and a "lovely person."

Baker, a recognizable character actor, also has appeared on scores of TV shows such as Chicago Fire, and in the movies AnchormanSpider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3. In Selma, he played J.Edgar Hoover.
